What to Expect in Your First Counselling Session in Edinburgh.
Starting counselling can feel like a big step , and it’s completely natural to feel a mix of curiosity, nerves, or even uncertainty. Whether you're seeking individual support or couples counselling in Edinburgh, knowing what to expect from your first session can help ease some of those worries and set the tone for a positive experience.
A Free Introductory Call
Before we begin working together, I offer a free 15–20 minute introductory call. This is a chance for us to get to know each other a little, for you to ask any questions you might have, and to see if I feel like the right fit for you.
This short, informal chat is a great way to get a feel for how I work, and for me to understand a bit about what’s bringing you to therapy. If we decide to go ahead, I’ll then send over a contract and a short intake form, which helps me get a better sense of your background and your hopes for therapy.
Your First Counselling Session
Your first counselling session is a space where you can bring whatever feels comfortable for you. Some people come with specific things they want to talk about, while others are not quite sure where to start, both are completely okay.
The session is led at your pace. There’s no pressure to share everything right away. It’s about starting to build a connection, understanding what’s brought you to therapy, and exploring what you’d like to get out of our work together.
What to Expect in Couples Counselling
If you’re coming for couples counselling, the first session is also a chance for me to get to know both of you and understand what’s happening in your relationship. We’ll talk about what’s been going on, what you each hope to get from therapy, and begin to explore how you communicate and relate to one another.
Whether you’re facing a specific challenge – such as frequent arguments, feeling distant, or navigating something like infidelity, or simply want to strengthen your connection, this session will lay the groundwork for how we’ll work together moving forward.
A Warm, Down-to-Earth Approach
My approach is friendly, open, and down-to-earth. I take an active role in sessions, I don’t just sit back and nod. You can expect thoughtful questions, gentle challenges, and a collaborative space where you feel heard and supported.
Counselling isn’t always easy, but it can be incredibly rewarding. My goal is to help you feel more grounded, connected, and clear about the direction you want to take.
